# Initialize wallet signing

Sets up Managed custody for the project's named provider by creating its active signing configuration and first wallet.

`POST /v1/wallets/initialize`

Production projects use BYOK only: there this returns 403 with details.reason custody_mode_not_allowed, and wallets are created in a Custody Connection with POST /v1/wallets and connectionId.

Requires an [API key](/docs/developing-with-sdp/authentication) with the `wallets.configure` action.

## Headers

  Required for dashboard sessions. API keys use their assigned project.

- **`401`** Unauthorized

  Same fields as `400`.

- **`403`** Forbidden. Requires the `wallets.configure` action: an API key must hold it (a module's `manage` or `execute` also covers its `read`), and a signed-in member's organization role must include it. Without it the error is INSUFFICIENT_PERMISSIONS and `error.details.action` names the action. Any other 403 names its own reason. Forbidden: the caller lacks the route's action or the API key is wallet-scoped, or custody setup was refused. A refusal's details.reason names the failed check: custody_mode_not_allowed when a Production project names Managed custody (Production is BYOK only), custody_provider_not_in_release_channel, or provider_not_entitled.
